How long can I live in Domus Academica? Can I get an extension?
The maximum time of living in Domus Academica is five years. The counting starts when you first move into Domus. Summers spent away from Domus will not extend the time of the right to stay, military/civil service or an exchange year abroad will. All housing and rental is handled by HOAS. I am leaving to work abroad for the summer, can I rent my apartment to a friend?
Subletting is forbidden. If a person other than stated in the lease is living in the apartment, the lease will be terminated.

My room windows are dirty. How often are they washed?
The tenant is responsible for washing the apartment's windows. Window keys and washing equipment can be loaned from the maintenance company. E-mail: palvelukeskus@iss.fi.

Who will change the light bulbs in my apartment?
The tenant is responsible for buying new bulbs and changing them. If the lampshade is broken, contact the maintenance. E-mail: palvelukeskus@iss.fi.

Who will pay if my belongings are stolen from the storage room on the attic?
The property is stored at your own risk.

Can I bring my pet to visit me, even if pets are not allowed in the apartments?
A short-term weekend visit is allowed. If you share an apartment, you need your flatmate's approval. Otherwise keeping all pets is forbidden (aquariums are allowed).

The curtain hooks are missing from my curtain rail. Do I have to buy them myself?
The tenants have to buy their own curtain hooks and rings. You can get them from the department stores.

Am I allowed to smoke in my room and if not, where can I smoke?
Smoking inside is forbidden. In the end of each house is a balcony where smoking is allowed. Close the balcony doors behind you.

Can I rent a sauna, a cabinet or a recreation room for a private party? Who should I contact?
Sauna with the pool is rented to companies for private use on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 PM to 10 PM., sauna B on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 PM to 10 PM.

The meeting room at house B can be rented by the Student Unions organizations from HYY Student Unions office, tel. (09) 1311 4215.

Can I get an Internet connection at Domus?
Houses B and C are connected to the computer network of the University of Helsinki. All students with a valid user ID and a user contract can use the Internet. Others and those living in house D (at Hietaniemenkatu 14 A) can purchase broadband connections from for example HTV, DNA, Elisa or Sonera.
