History
Domus Academica is Finland's oldest student house built especially for
students. The first tenants moved in in the autumn of 1947. The Student
Union decided to build the houses due to the poor housing situation of
the students.
A few years later a student restaurant was opened in Domus. In 1955 the
property was expanded so that the student library could move into a new
library house in Leppäsuo. Before that the library was situated in
the city centre, where Kaivotalo is nowadays.
Leppäsuonkatu 9 C was finished just in time for the Helsinki Olympic
Games in 1952. During the Games the international press was accomodated
there.
In December of 1968 the last building, Hietaniemenkatu 14 or house D,
was finished.
In 1996 house A was sold to HOAS.
House B was renovated in 2000. The renovation started in the beginning
of the year and the tenants were able to move into the renovated apartments
in December of the same year.
House C was renovated in 2004. All the kitchens and toilets were renovated.
Both houses have fixed Internet-connections.
